  4.     At long last it's official: Washington is a city beyond
  5. redemption. Last week, after a decade of collective meditation
  6. designed to lower the capital's crime rate and improve its
  7. quality of life, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has ordered his flock
  8. to give up and pull out of the place. From his European
  9. headquarters in the Netherlands, the bearded founder of the
  10. transcendental meditation movement declared, "Everyone should
  11. leave this sea of mud. People should move to a peaceful, neat,
  12. clean atmosphere." Oddly enough, the Maharishi did not include
  13. any specific references to Congress in his remarks.

  15.     In the wake of the Maharishi's pronouncement, his
  16. remaining followers put their homes on the market and planned
  17. to move to Fairfield, Iowa, where both the organization's
  18. national office and Maharishi International University are
  19. located. City officials responded to the abandonment with a
  20. yogic equanimity worthy of the Maharishi himself. Declared a
  21. spokesman from the office of Washington's unruffled Mayor Sharon
  22. Pratt Kelly: "Peace be with them."
